Quarter Horse Times 1st Quarter 2010 Horse Show

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      5. 2009 Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 20
2)    Entry Number 6

Reasons:  Both of these colts appear to be very nice with balance, good legs and pretty heads.
I like the 2nd place horse a lot and might have placed him above the 1st place colt if the 2nd place colt had been shown to me better.

The 2nd place colt does appear to have a cleaner neck than the 1st place colt but, at this age, the neck is not much of an indicator of what it will look like when the colt is mature.  At this age, the neck may appear both shorter and thicker due to baby fat.

I mainly placed the #20 colt higher than the #6 colt because the #6 colt did not have enough pictures to let me see him from all sides.  The #20 colt placed at the top of the class because he was presented better to me with more pictures from more angles.

CLASS NAME      6. 2004 & Older Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 19

Reasons:  This horse is nicely balanced and, over all, has good performance conformation.
As the only entry in this class, he is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      9. 2006 Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Geldings

1)    Entry Number 38

Reasons:  This horse is smooth, well balanced and has very nice neck.
As the only entry in this class, he is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      12. 2004 & Older Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Geldings

1)    Entry Number 41

Reasons:  This horse appears to be very nice.  I particularly like the depth of girth and the smoothness from his withers to his shoulder.

As the only entry in this class, he is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      14. 2007 Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 8

Reasons:  This filly is well balanced and should mature into a good, performance type mare.

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      15. 2006 Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 37

Reasons:  This is an attractive mare.

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      17. 2009 Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 42

2)    Entry Number 9

3)    Entry Number 36

Reasons:  Although #9 appears to be the smoothest filly in the class, I placed #42 in 1st place because she appears to have the prettiest head, biggest hip and most muscle definition.

I placed Number 9 in 2nd place.

I placed #36 in 3rd place because the pictures of her did not really allow me to see the filly well.  There was no profile view nor was there any way for me to see much about her feet and legs except from the rear view. I'm sure she is very nice but was simply not shown to me very well.

CLASS NAME      18.     2003 & Older Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 39

2)    Entry Number 7

3)    Entry Number 30

4)    Entry Number 15

5)    Entry Number 35

6)    Entry Number 31

7)    Entry Number 17

8)    Entry Number 33

Reasons:

This was a very tough  class to try to judge.  It would have been much better if every entry (in the whole show) had sent pictures showing left side, right side, front and back.

Also, I'm pretty sure that every mare in the class is a fine performance mare... but that is not what I was trying to judge.  My task was, simply to place the mares on the basis of my opinion of good looks and functional conformation.

Since none of these mares had any glaring conformation flaws that I could see from the pictures, I placed these mares in order of my impression of their balance and beauty (and, of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

Truly, these placings are merely my opinion based on some very unequal pictures.

In 1st place, I placed Number 39 because I really liked her profile picture.  She has great balance, deep heart, good withers and her legs appear just about right.  However, her other two pictures were troubling to me.  Did the owner not include to lower legs to hide flaws?  I don't know.  In the end I assumed that the mare's lower legs were probably fine and, based on the profile picture, I went ahead and placed the mare 1st.

I placed Number 7 in 2nd place because, while I really like the looks of this mare... for all I know she may be the very best mare in the class... I just liked the looks of Number 39 a little better.

I placed Number 30 in 3rd place because, while I'll bet she is a really good mare, she is a little more of the Thoroughbred type than I would prefer for good looks... and looks is all I can go in in judging this class.   I just liked the looks of Number 39 a little better.

I placed  Number 15 in 4th place because, while I thought she is a very smooth mare, had the most balance and physical beauty of any in the class, there was only one picture and I discounted because of it.   But, in the end, I placed the mare because I really, really like the way she looks in that one picture.  With more and better pictures, I think that this mare would have easily been my 1st place mare.

I almost put her at the bottom of the class because her only picture was of her wearing a saddle.  It made me wonder if the owner of this horse was hiding a conformation flaw with the saddle.

I placed Number 35 in 5th place.  I really like this mare with her deep heart, big hip and nice neck and head.  I might have placed this mare much higher but the pictures I had to view did not allow me to see the mare as much as I wanted.

I placed Number 31 in 6th place.  Overall, I really like this mare.  She is well balanced.  I placed her below Number 35 because, although I like her, her back legs set more up under her than I would prefer.  It may be just the way she is standing but I can only know what is shown in the pictures.  Also, her head is not as pretty, to me, as the mares I placed above her.

I placed Number 17 in 7th place.  I really think that this mare is a fine performer.  She just has that look.  And I appreciate that she was shown to me in a good picture from each side.  Although she is nicely balanced she is not as muscular as I was looking for, she appears to be a little sickle hocked (this may be just the way she is standing) and her head is not as pretty as other mares at the top of the class.

I placed Number 33 in 8th place because, while she is an attractive mare, she appears to lack the muscling and refinement in her head and neck that can be seen in the mares at the top of the class.

20. 2007 Traditional Halter Type Quarter Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 10

Reasons:  This is a beautiful colt.  As the only entry in this class, he is the winner.

However, while it may be just the way he is standing, this colt appears to be sickle hocked.  His hind feet are far up under him.  I view this as a serious flaw for functional soundness... so, if another horse (even a less pretty horse) with a more correct set to the hind legs, I probably would have placed that horse above this one.  I know that this is a pure halter class but even halter horses should have excellent conformation of the feet and legs.  If an imaginary line from the very back of the hip going straight down does not touch the back of the hock and the back of the pastern (or very nearly so) the horse will be predisposed to unsoundness when ridden.

CLASS NAME      30.       2004 & Older Traditional Halter Type Quarter Horse Geldings

1)    Entry Number 16

2)    Entry Number 13

Reasons:  Both of these horses are very nice and it was difficult for me to decide which one I like best.
I could very easily place either of these horses at the top of the class.

I finally decided to place Number 16 in 1st place because I think he has a little more muscle definition in his rear end than it appears that Number 13 has.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      32.     2007 Traditional Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 32

Reasons:  She appears to be a very nice mare but one picture taken from a distance is not really showing a horse to a judge, is it?

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      34.     2005 Traditional Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 11

2)    Entry Number 14

Reasons:  Both of these are very nice looking mares.  It was difficult for me to choose a winner.

I could very easily place either of these mares at the top of the class.

I finally decided to place Number 11 in first place because I thought she appears to be a little smoother in her conformation than does Number 14.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      36.     2004 & Older Traditional Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 30

Reasons:  I really like this mare with her deep heart, big hip and nice neck and head.  I liked her in Class Number 18, too.

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      44.     Western Horsemanship for Adults 18 or over as of Jan 1

1)    Entry Number 17

2)    Entry Number 29

Reasons:  First place is Number 17.  This horse appears to be better broke and performs in a more relaxed manner than does Number 29, who is also a very nice horse.  Number 29 appears to be slightly behind the bit. and appears more bothered by what he is asked to do than is Number 17.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      45.   Western Horsemanship for Teens who were 13-17 years of age as of Jan 1

1)    Entry Number 28

Reasons:  This is a very nice mare.  When I saw her in Class #18 (2003 & Older Performance Halter Type Quarter Horse Mares).

I thought that, while she did not have the conformation I was seeking for the Halter class, she was likely a very good performance mare.  I was right in thinking this.

This mare won Class #44  (Western Horsemanship for Adults 18 or over as of Jan 1) and, if anything, she performed better and in more relaxed manner in this class.  I like her.

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      52.     2008 Performance Halter Type Paint Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 22

Reasons:  This is a pretty and nicely conformed performance type colt.

As the only entry in this class, he is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      57.     2004 & Older Performance Halter Type Paint Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 40

2)    Entry Number 45

3)    Entry Number 25

Reasons:   While all three of these horses appear to be very nice, because he was the smoothest, most muscular and, to me, the prettiest horse in the class I placed Number 40 in 1st place.

Entry Number 45, the 2nd place horse, may be the best horse in this class and looked very good but, to me, not as good as
the first place horse.

Entry Number 25 in in 3rd place.  He may be much better than he appeared to me.  It was hard to tell.  The pictures did not show him in profile and so it was difficult to compare him with the other two horses.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      65.     2007 Performance Halter Type Paint Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 21

Reasons:   This is an attractive mare.

As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      67.     2005 Performance Halter Type Paint Horse Mares

1)    Entry Number 34

Reasons:   This is a nice mare with good withers, deep heart and a nice neck and head.
As the only entry in this class, she is the winner.

++++++++++

CLASS NAME      75.     2004 & Older Traditional Halter Type Paint Horse Stallions

1)    Entry Number 40

2)    Entry Number 45

Reasons:   While both horses appear to be very nice, because he was the smoothest, most muscular and, to me, the prettiest horse in the class I placed Number 40 in 1st place.

Entry Number 45, the 2nd place horse, may be the best horse in this class and looked very good but, to me, not as good as the first place horse.

I placed these two horses as I did when I judged them in Class #57 (2004 & Older Performance Halter Type Paint Horse Stallions)
