PATTERNS and PROCEDURES

1.   Procedure for Exhibiting in Longe Line Classes

These are video classes. Your video must have been made within the past 12 months.

You may work your horse at liberty in a round pen, or on a longe line.

The video should be approximately 3 minutes in length. (You don't get extra credit for longer video; our judge has things to do besides judge our show.)

Exhibit the horse at the walk, jog (trot) and lope (canter) in both directions. The video should show upward transitions and downward transitions, and stops and turns.

The horse's way of going will count the most. He needn't be 'dead broke.'

Presentation details will matter where entries are otherwise equal. These are things such as grooming of the horse.

For best results, your video should show the horse centered on the screen and filling the screen. The videographer should pan with the movement of the horse, and zoom to keep the horse's body filling the screen.

No music, please. If you can, you are encouraged to leave the sound track off or to minimize it.

Do not put any titling on your video. If you wish, you may put a discreet copyright notice at the beginning or the end.

The Longe Line performance must be one continuous, unedited performance. You may not take the jog from one video and the lope from another and put them together.

Some folks who have old computers and who are on dialup may find it necessary to split their Longe Line video into segments for uploading. That is OK, as long as the performance is one continuous performance.

Cones A and B should not be more than 50 feet apart. Cones B and C should not be more than 40 feet apart. The camcorder should be positioned so that it has the view inside all three cones. You may substitute buckets or similar items for cones, as long as they are easily visible on the video.

Pause at Cone A.

5.   Lead Line Horsemanship and Lead Line Equitation

Equitation riders must wear helmets and Western riders are encouraged to wear helmets.  It is traditional for Western riders to wear Western hats, but we do encourage the use of equestrian safety helmets for children. However, this is at the discretion of the parents.

The child may be riding within a round pen or on a longe line or both. Safety first! The child may not be riding in the open without a longe line on the horse. An assistant may walk beside the child for safety, but if possible, should not obscure the view of the child and horse.

The video should be about 3 minutes in length, but not longer. Show the child riding in a counter-clockwise circle. Have the child stop the horse 3 different times, pause, and then walk forward again.

A saddle that fits both horse and rider suitably is important. The rider should be correctly attired for their discipline. Face it, cuteness is probably a bonus.

Most importantly, this should be fun for the little guys.

6.   Lead Pony (Photo Classes) Western and Hunt Seat

These are photo classes and the primary intention is for them to be fun for the kids and their parents. Equestrian Safety helmets are required for Hunt Seat riders and are greatly encouraged for Western riders.
